Medicine and cooking during
"hard times"
Often shelf life and food safety
comes up for obvious reasons, including during "hard times".
The old time idea of using your eyes
and nose to check whatever is put out in sight is probably a good idea during
"hard times". After all, some foods and medicines could be bad for us
to consume.
Now during "good times",
paying attention to expiration dates is probably a reasonable and safe idea, too.
Remember that keeping anything cool
and out of the sunlight is a good way to extend shelf life, if you can. Said
another way, it might look and smell better, like be safe enough to consume.
And sharing anything that could go
bad is a good community idea, like sharing venison harvested during the warm
season.
Remember spices often became popular
to mask the smell of meat going bad. And never forget you can use heat to kill
many bad things that hurt we humans. And the heat can be from cooking, or
boiling.
Last remember that salt used to be
worth its weight in gold. Now we have a "too much" problem, but
during "hard times" don't waste your salt. We humans need it to live,
including our sick people.
