Religion and the government involvement in marriage

There is much discussion on this subject these days.

For the record, I am not very religious.

I have come at the question through the "if times get hard" route.

I have done my own homework on the subject, which after all, goes back thousands of years.

            Here's my opinions so far.

Homosexuality is generally condemned by most religions. And even I have homosexual relatives, too. Now homosexuals are a  very small percentage of our populations.

People do want to get married.

The marriage combination of religion and government is one of long standing common convenience. Said another, we would have to invent it if we didn't have it already.

For the "government" to try impose its standards on religion will cause major fractures, maybe even revolt or civil war.

Bottom line, if we ever have to get down to "if times get hard" situations, boys and girls will always want to get married in religious settings.

After that, our human governments will catch up as best we can.

The friction between religion and government will probably always continue, but I suspect religion will win out over government as to what marriage is in that religion. Now expect this friction to continue for thousands of years more.
