Take the top off your can.2

Wash out the can and make sure it is completely dry before use.

Punch a hole in the middle of your lid for the wick.

Cut length of string that is 1 in. (2.5 cm) longer than the can

Coat the length of string in wax to maintain its shape except for 1 in. (2.5 cm), which will be situated at the bottom of the can.

Place the string through the hole in the lid. Make sure that the inch of string sticking out is covered in wax.

Apply wax around the string where it emerges from the hole. This will lock it in place.

Fill the can with vegetable oil.

Place the lid on the can.

Wait 15 minutes before lighting so the string can absorb some oil.
