It’s Time to Rethink America’s Corn System
First, an
article from Scientific American: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/time-to-rethink-corn/
Second, the
same corn (if need be) can be used for both food and other uses, often ethanol
fuel production for our cars these days. Generally speaking there are better
corn seed types for one use than the other, and to increase one use often means
giving up something else in another area of use.
Of course
other grains can be used, too. There is a lot of rice grown in America, for one
example. And we have vast wheat fields grown by our farmers, too. Most flour in
America comes from wheat these days, also. Now there are many other grain type
crops, too. Soybeans come to mind.
But bottom
line, we can still grow enough corn for food if we need to in 2015. Said even another
way, we always must eat to live, and eating at a good price is important to so
many. People have rioted over reductions in cooking fuel subsidies, for
example.
Third, learn
about “fractionation” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractionation). In a nutshell that is a method for
dividing up the use of the corn we grow.
Fourth and
last, here is a present day commercial sales pitch (link) which also has some
interesting information in it: http://www.didionmilling.com/ Said another way, try
reading between the lines and make up your own mind about eating and food
(including your cooking oil) and fuel for your Family and loved ones.
Once to
prove I could do it, I made corn pone,
also called at an earlier time Indian
pone. For me, having some “fake” butter to put on it sure helped my eating
it. Now I better know about why Jeremiah
Johnson in one movie scene spit out the Indian pone his new “Flat Head” wife
made, but also made his inherited kid eat it, saying “eat it boy, it’s good for
you”.
