Poster's comments:
I
suspect there are other defensive chemicals to use, too. Ammonia and chlorine
come to my mind.
I
expect pepper spray might also get used against aggressive or rabid wildlife animals,
like bears or raccoons, or even a pet in some cases. Pepper spray is a commercial
product anyone can buy in the USA.
Might
be time to get a gas mask or two, just in case.
Otherwise,
a regular painter breather's mask might
work OK, too. Also consider using
medical type masks. I myself have breathed the bad results of the Kuwait oil
fires, and the amount of gunk my body cleaned from just breathing was
embarrassing. I just hated blowing my
nose and having nasty oily snot and sooty mucous come out. Mostly we all used our bandanas as
simple breathing filters, and they worked OK.
Don't
forget things like scalding water, fires, alarms, flashing lights, sirens, other
ringers and methods to send an alarm, scalding oil, etc.
These are in addition things like guns,
crossbows, pellet guns, BB guns, sling shots, sharpened instruments (like
knives and shovels and screw drivers), rocks, booby traps, trip wires, dug tank
traps, prepared other defenses (like
fields of fire), etc. Heck, even Lewis and Clark in the early 1800's had a
"famous" air powered rifle.
Even
using insect repellant is a form of chemical defense. I also use powdered
sulfur (often called sublimed sulfur these days or even Flowers of Sulfur), and
it works quite well to this day for insect defense.
Last,
even tear gas and CS gas has adversely affected me during my military training.
Most of us think we can just suck it up and tough it out, but the usual result
is the embarrassing results of coming of the gas chamber with snot and tears
and gagging going on. It is funny, in a sordid sort of way.
