Food and security

Food and security

When I sometimes watch on TV some scene where people are growing food in their yard, it gets my attention. The scene is often quite pretty. The stalks of corn are strong and undisturbed.

I also think how naive a scene like this probably is.  After all, we all will get hungry, and I know what I would do if I and my Family were cold and hungry.  I would sneak in and steal the food growing in my neighbor's yard.

And it is not always humans stealing food. Back a while back we grew our own sorghum to feed the quail, only to find out the feral hogs would mow down the sorghum to eat the seeds, too. So we went back to buying sorghum seeds and doing our quail bit without the time to grow our own sorghum, as it turned out for the hogs' benefit.

So all these thoughts go through my mind as I consider what to do if times should get hard. One of these thoughts is balancing food growing with security to protect what I grow.

I suggest you think about this dilemma, too, where you live.

I mentioned this dilemma to a local young fellow. He proudly announced he would stay up forever.  I told him how naive I thought that was since even humans have to eat and rest, like it or not.

Of course if grocery stores stay open and are full of food in perpetuity, then my worries are a waste of my time and effort. I sure hope I am wrong about my fears and worries.
