            I have a young and apparently confused young man and friend who has on multiple occasions announced he is a pacifist, sometimes he even he says he is an anarcho-pacifist.  Now this was after he had tried to join the military. To me he is a very good and natural academic type, and would also probably make a good nurse. I applaud him for his sincere honesty.

            But he has also said if backed into a corner, he will fight.

            So I said to him, then you're no pacifist. Something else perhaps, but certainly no pacifist.

            I reminded him that there are some things worth fighting for, especially if it comes down to some kind of hard times' kind of situation. For example, both his (he is age 27) parents are still alive.

            In the meantime, he can be idealistic. It's kind of like being opposed to rape in war, as an example. Heck, anybody can say that.
