History of the Internet
Here's a long wiki link on the
subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Internet
Of course to use the internet, like
for email, one must have public electricity and attached cables, etc.
But even before the "internet"
one could use "email" using an older system that reminded me of
"reverberation". And of course, there has always been the postal mail
system, too. Just imagine the new delay factors that kick in, then.
In the last 3 or 4 decades, there
even has been a vast new network of cables and satellite connections built. So,
for example, one could make a direct dial telephone call from the slopes of
Mount Fuji, Japan, to Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Before that time it was more
"primitive", at best.
So if we lose public electricity for
a good while, we'll still figure out alternatives in this vast land called the
USA. Just be prepared to change your standards, especially as to convenience
and waiting times.
And last, there is an idea called "triage".
So, for example, I suspect big cities like New York, London, Moscow, and Tokyo,
may get restored public electric service before more intermediate sized cities
like Istanbul, Saint Louis, Marseilles, and Riyadh. So where I live will
probably be last, and I should anticipate that, too.
