GEOMAGNETIC STORM
A minor geomagnetic storm is in progress on June 7th as Earth passes through a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind. Paul Beebe sends this picture of the auroras over Lang Lake in Upsala, Ontario, Canada:
"Had quite a bit of fog low on the lake but the auroras, though a little blurred by the mist, had no problem shining through it", says Beebe. "It was a very lovely but unexpected few hours out."
More auroras are in the offing. One and perhaps two CMEs are expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on June 8th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 65% chance of geomagnetic storms when the CMEs arrive.
