Salt

Salt

First is a decent link on the subject:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt

Second, even during my earlier Marine boot camp time (circa 1969) where we sure exercised a lot in a summer swampy area, we had to take salt pills twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Heck, even I had a lot of white salty sweat type stuff that evaporated on my collar area, like all the rest of us going through the same training. So I believed in the purpose of taking extra salt pills at the time, like for all of us.

Now there is so much salt in our prepared foods and our habits in the USA, and it sure does help the taste of most meals we eat, so now we have a problem to solve.  And I read, and also believe; too much consumption of salt has become a problem to many in America, today. Heck there are even now guidelines on how much salt to ingest.

There was a time in our human history, when many could also not get enough salt, and it was literally worth it’s weight in gold when you could get it. There are many good books on this subject, too. And many favorable areas are full of “salt licks”, like in North America. Even our wild animals need salt, too, and they have figured that out for their own purposes.

Even in 1824 two local fellows hand augured a well (later they copper lined it) down to a salt water layer in order to extract and boil off the water in order to sell the salt.

So decades ago (at a Family party) I asked two doctors what they thought on the subject. And generally they agreed with the premise that it depends on the situation. So if where you live, and assuming how the future sorts out for you, consider your own circumstances, use your own judgment, and go from there.

Sometimes, ingesting enough salt makes a lot of sense.
