PUTNAM COUNTY — Leaving a legacy of service and dedication to education, Dr. Wallace Samuel Prescott died Friday at the age of 93.

Dr. Prescott spent more than 40 years of his life working at Tennessee Technological University, serving as interim president of the university from 1985 to 1987, and two Putnam County schools bear the Prescott family name.

Dr. Prescott and his late wife Margaret, who passed away in 2006, were highly regarded in the education and civic communities here. Both spent their life working in education, with Mrs. Prescott working as a Putnam County teacher and becoming the supervisor of curriculum for the Putnam County school system.

Prescott South Middle School and Prescott South Elementary School were named in the couple’s honor.

“On behalf of the entire Putnam County School System, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the Prescott family and multitude of friends,” Director of Schools Jerry Boyd said Saturday. “We are fortunate to share and celebrate Dr. Prescott's family name at two of our schools (Prescott South Elementary and Middle) to honor his life's commitment to a vision for quality education in our region.”

Teachers, students and administrators at Prescott schools maintained a close connection to Dr. Prescott since the schools opened in 2011, honoring him at school events.

“We also share and will continue his dedication to service to others as we will work daily to engage and inspire our students and community in seeking excellence in education, as he did throughout his lifetime,” Boyd said.

When the Prescott schools opened, Dr. Prescott was assignedthe honorary jersey number 1 on the Prescott South Middle School football team and students celebrated Dr. Prescott’s 92nd and 93rd birthdays with him in special school assemblies.

Dr. Prescott graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1964 and joined the university’s engineering staff the same year. He served as a TTU faculty member for more than a decade. For 21 years, he worked as Tennessee Tech's chief academic officer. After his retirement, he returned to serve as president of the university for a year. After two years of retirement, he returned to the university to serve as interim president during a transition period for TTU.

Both Dr. and Mrs. Prescott were also involved in many civic, professional and church-related activities.
