Another choice

Another choice

Which way will the world evolve…..the nation state or something else?

It sure appears most Western governments still support the “nation state” idea. Many of these “nation states” were created by Western diplomats and politicians out of former administrative boundaries they used to rule with, including the colonial boundaries in much of Africa. Other boundaries came out of World War’s I and II, the much older Council of Vienna, the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, other “agreements”, and even what the British and Russian diplomats and politicians came up with in the Caucus areas and in the British India part of the world. And now some Eastern governments support the “nation state” idea, too.

That disparate groups of humans were often lumped together seems to be a poor idea in hindsight as old rivalries still continue. Old loyalties, often tribal, and even religious frictions, are still alive and well. After all, many of these present day boundaries are often around a century old. But not all are. Even the country of China is still trying to absorb the ethnic Muslim Urgars, or the Buddhist Tibetans, who want to go their own way it seems.

That many governments still send their children (and their Nation’s wealth) to impose their present day boundaries on others is still amazing to me.

I wonder what it would be like to come back in another century of time, and see what the boundaries look like then. For myself, I suspect the people then will see a Kurdistan and Baluchistan on the world maps as examples. Present day boundaries for Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, and Iran will change to reflect this, if it even happens.

None of this is worth fighting for from my point of view, but I also suspect a lot of men and women in these areas will fight for change in their lives and their Family’s lives, including boundaries and how they are ruled.  Said another way, I don’t want to fight these people in their own lands……I’ve got enough problems in my own land.  And I will fight in my own land if it comes to pass. It seems Clausewitz (around two centuries ago) had a point when he said war is an extension of politics by another means.

And will vagabonds and brigands arise during this period for their own selfish reasons?  Most likely. But they don’t rule the world; the majority of humans who are good, well intentioned, experienced, work, and moral still do rule the world. That’s who our politicians and diplomats must always focus on. Many would even call that leadership.

Now that can be a choice.
