            One can even buy commercial grade thatching these days, though I have never tried it.

            One can even get thatch sealer as one method to waterproof the thatch roof if that is an objective. Plan B is just to use more thatch layers to do the same thing.

            Last, one make a roof out of about anything, like the sky is the limit. For one example, palm fronds can help make a nice nipa hut roof (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nipa_hut ) .  For another example some broken plywood can be jury rigged together to make a passable roof to try avoid the wind and rain and snow and direct sun.
