Radiation patterns are subjective, but the idea can apply to volcanoes,
too.

In the interim after a nuclear blast or a nuclear accident, use the
half-life principle. Basically, hunker
down in a safe place in your house, like a basement or interior area, and wait
for three days. Use any stored water, including the water from the hot water
heater, to get clean water to drink.
5) Consider an evacuation to a safer
area, if you think you can do it safely.
