Summer gardening for those inclined
This year I plan on planting more potatoes, squash, mini-bell
peppers, and of course tomatoes. As cold as the winter was this last winter, my
potatoes survived somehow, like even the greenery stuff survived OK. Now the frost
during the cold season did kill off my tomato plants.
The local “planting date” is May 15th, so I still have some time,
too.
I would encourage anyone even remotely interested in gardening
some food to do so in a small plot, like 10 feet square. I will go so far to
suggest growing tomatoes or squash. They tend to grow like weeds.
Even in Monterey in 2015 most people don’t know how to “put up” the
food they grow, so one (like me) has to often just read the directions, eat it,
and see if I live. A century ago I think most people knew how to do this. These
days I use the eyeball and smell test, by the way, and that seems to work just
fine.
