Global warming and too many people on
the earth
And many of
us thought we had left fads after high school. Boy was I wrong.
One current
fad is blaming global warming on we people who live on the earth. Now, to me,
this was just an academic kind of drill until politicians became involved and have
started making public policy decisions based on the fad, at least the fad as I
perceive it. And they are using enormous amounts of money that affects our
lives, often our tax dollars, to have their way.
Playing God
is always a tough proposition, too.
Now I have
been studying global warming since the 1960’s when I first went to Georgia
Tech, and I have done some computer model programming, too. So even I know how
to manipulate any computer model to get the results I want to get, or even
sometimes get paid for what I produce. And sometimes the reward is money, a career,
or an academic degree. In this let’s just say the jury is still out. After all,
some students are doing a good job in studying this phenomenon. And Galileo
suffered through this dilemma in his time, too.
Even now deceased former President Eisenhower warned about the
“scientific industrial complex” along with his warming about the “military
industrial complex”.
And even in
my lifetime (born in 1948), Time magazine has had a cover story about the
coming ice age, and now the same magazine has a cover story about the coming
global warming catastrophe, so even the media is getting involved in this
issue, too.
Now some of
the probable outcomes are adverse to we humans, mostly in the amount of
food we can grow. If that comes to pass,
the impact will most likely be gradual. After all, we had a mini-ice age for
example not too many centuries ago, and we all are here anyway. Obviously something good happened, too, in
order for we humans to not only survive, but to prosper later, too. And things
were probably simpler for our ancestors as they did not have a “too many humans
problem” like we may have today. Like droughts, it really depends on where you
live.
So what to
do these days. For me, I am reminded of the time when I was a teenager and
would call my father a “cheapskate”. Now that I am an old father, I prefer the
term “thrifty”, and now use that for my own father (now deceased), too. So in most cases, just be as thrifty as you
can be. My other observation involves the “Golden Rule” which suggests treating
others like you want to be treated. Just use the Golden Rule as best you can,
too. Now this brings up the issue of morality, but that is another adult subject
to me.
And of
course there is practicality, too. I am growing some Siberian tomato plants on
my own land, also. After all, we do have
to eat. And I want to hedge my bets as best I can. And talking about calories
and bulk vs food eating enjoyment is another subject, too.
